Our daughter was diagnosed with unilateral hearing loss at age 2. By the age of 4, she was totally deaf in her left ear. The cause? Congenital CMV, which went undiagnosed during my pregnancy and during her early years of life. She passed her newborn hearing screen before we went home, which made it all the more difficult to catch. Between birth and age 2, she lost much of her hearing in her left ear and by age 4 she was profoundly deaf on that side.

After some battles with the insurance company, we got approved for a unilateral implant. We were implanted at a two processor facility, so we selected Cochlear's Nucleus 7 and Kanso 1. Within a few days of activation, it was apparent that she preferred the off-ear Kanso 1 and we used it almost exclusively.

Through an amazing stroke of luck- in part because our surgery was delayed because of COVID-19, we were activated within a few months of the release of the Kanso 2, which meant we qualified for a free upgrade to the Kanso 2. We swapped our N7 and anxiously awaited the new processor with the latest features. Our hopes were dashed when we realized the Kanso 2 would not stay on no matter what we did; the single retention port at the bottom of the device was useless.

We set out to find an answer to our problems, and CI Retention Solutions was born. These cases are our answer to the retention issues associated with cochlear implant processors.
